Legal proceedings = often drug out over long periods of time Court rulings can later be challenged  thus keeping problems in a state of limbo without a real, lasting solution. Fairly popular thought that lawyers thrive off of dissention and fighting, thus trustees wanted colonists to work issues out themselves partly because colonists were too busy with making the colony “work” to fight over matters for very long.
