Course description • To acquaint the student with the concepts and tools necessary to cope with the tradeoffs of managing stability but planning for change in an environment of global competition. • Concepts and tools include decision theory, statistical process control, forecasting and planning, inventory management, scheduling, queuing theory, and quality in the design of good services, and processes.

Assignments • There will be 7 assignments throughout the semester. • These assignments will be computer assignments that require the use of • Excel • Excel OM • Comes with the text • Available in the CBA labs and student lounge • Available to download from the website • Word or other word processor

  12. Assignments (cont) • All assignments • Contain an A4 Report • Must be typed • Show all work • You will be required to work with a partner. There is a 10% penalty for turning in an assignment by yourself. • We will form partnerships during class and you may choose a partner to work with.

  13. Quizzes • Material on a quiz will be the information covered since the last quiz. • There will be a total of 12 quizzes. • Quizzes will be taken outside of class time using VISTA • You will have a week to complete the quiz. • NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES.

  14. Project • This is a group term project. You and your partner will work with another partnership that the instructor will assign. • The purpose of this project is for you to explore the operations function of an existing organization. • Your group is expected to select an organization and a process. This may be a service organization, a manufacturing organization, a government entity, a health service organization. • Your selection must be approved by the professor.

  15. In-class activities • There will be many in-class activities. • Demonstrations • Computer game • Games • Group discussions • Presentations • After each activity, you will have a brief writing assignment which will be turned in for all or nothing credit.

  16. In-class activities • One of every 5 of these buzz groups will be dropped. So if there are 20 in-class activities with buzz groups, only your best 16 will be included in the grade. • There will be no make-ups for the in-class activities. • Some in-class activities will occur as scheduled and announced. Some will be unscheduled/unannounced in-class activities.

  17. Final • Final will be COMPREHENSIVE, CLOSED BOOK, and CLOSED NOTES. • Any necessary formulas or tables will be provided. • Calculators may be used during the exam. • Calculators may not be shared during the exam. • For the final, you must attend the section for which you are registered. • The final exam is mandatory for all students.

  18. Final (cont) • Missed final • An unexcused absence will result in an F for the class. • In the case of an excused absence, arrangements will be made with the professor.

Final (cont) An excused absence will be granted only for an absence that meets all of the following conditions: • the instructor is notified PRIOR to the exam and the instructor APPROVES the absence prior to the exam OR 2) In the case of an unforeseen emergency absence, appropriate documentation is provided – police report, doctor’s report, etc…

  20. Policies • Class Attendance • You are encouraged to attend all classes. • If you miss a class, you may attend the corresponding class from another section. • EXCEPTION: You must take exams with the section for which you are registered.

  21. Policies • Withdrawal Policy: You may withdraw from the class until the drop date, Oct 26, 2007. After this date, as per the college policy, you may not drop for academic reasons. • Incomplete Policy: The I grade will be given only if a student, through no fault of his/her own, is unable to complete the course and has an excused absence from the final. Students receiving an I grade must contact the instructor ASAP and no later than the first week of the following semester to setup the contract for completing the course.

  22. Policies (cont) • Honor Policy: Exams and quizzes will be “closed-book” and are to be the sole work of each student. Anyone cheating or assisting another during an exam or quiz will be given a 0 for that exam/quiz and possibly a grade of F for the class. College procedures will be followed and the undergraduate dean will be notified. If warranted, additional action will be taken. Assignments should be the work of the partners.
