Science 801Robotics The Final Project
Task Your team will create a robot that will complete a number of challenges as it moves through a series of tasks. Each part of the challenge will be worth points and points will also be awarded for the best time through the course. You will need to reflect on past robot designs in order to decide how to make your robot as efficient as possible. As well, your choice of sensors will be important as to the type of program that will need to be developed.
What do I need to pass in? The final project will consist of 2 parts: • Electronic ppt presentation • Portfolio
Electronic Presentation Your team will be responsible for creating a slide show that documents all the work involved in construction of your robot. You will use the Engineering process as described in Unit 3 of the Science 701 course as the framework for your slide show. Ensure the slide show includes an Introduction, Conclusion and References.
The Engineering Process • Identify a need – What exactly needs to be done for this challenge ? • Define the problem to be solved – specify what types of problems you are going to encounter during the challenge and how will you overcome. Make a list of objectives and rank them in order of importance. • Conduct Research – identify the types of parts or components will help you achieve the task. Think of gear ratios, extensions, add on’s, number of motors, types of sensors, etc. Look at other robot designs for a variety of ideas.
Engineering Process 4. Analyze possible solutions – come up with at least 3 possible designs to meet the needs of the challenge. Identify the pros and cons of each design. Choose a design and justify your reasons for your choice. 5. Design, test, and evaluate your solutions – perform several trial runs and record information (weight, distances, speed). Explain in detail any modifications you make to your design. 6. Build – include pictures of all the different sections of the robot at different stages of the build. Print off and include in your portfolio. Hand written sketches should also be included.
Portfolio Your portfolio will consist of the following: • A daily log of work accomplished with title page. The log should be neat with a daily account of what everyone in the group did that day ( who worked on what part of the robot, who worked on EasyC-Pro, if the team tried something and it worked or did not work, etc.). • Flow chart of program used to accomplish the challenge. • All relevant pictures and sketches. • Final inventory
The Challenge Your robot will be expected to accomplish the following tasks: • Using RC, your robot will leave a start line and approach an empty pop can. At a distance of about 20 cm, the robot will then go into autonomous mode and drive to the can. • The robot is expected to pick up the can, move through a maze (to be determined), and set it down. • The robot is to turn left, and do a victory dance.
