  1. Abolition and The Underground Railroad The Fight To Free The Slaves By: Simon Yakum, Noah Lebovitz and Ian Yeung

  2. William Lloyd Garrison: White slave abolitionist. Started paper called “The Liberator” in 1831 that spread the idea of emancipation-freeing slaves. He founded the New England Anti-Slavery society in 1832 that attacked churches and the government for failing to condemn slavery. Frederick Douglass: Leader of the abolitionist movement. He stood as a living counter-example to slaveholders' arguments that slaves lacked the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens. Important Leaders Harriet Tubman: African-American abolitionist, humanitarian and Union spy. She was a slave who escaped slavery and made over 19 missions to rescue more than 300 slaves using the Underground Railroad. She also helped John Brown recruit men for his raid on Harpers Ferry. Harriet Beecher Stowe: Published “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”

  4. Connection to Jacksonian Democracy The gag rule prevented abolitionist from sending petitions to congress in 1836. It was repealed in 1845 because John Quincy Adams said that they were violating the constitutional right to petition congress. Frederick Douglas decided that the Nebraska territory should be two states since he felt that slavery couldn’t exist on the open prairies, which ruined the Missouri Compromise. This led to the Kansas-Nebraska Act that allowed popular sovereignty to determine whether the states would have slavery.
