UNIT PLANNING GUIDE • BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND • BASED ON BACKWARD DESIGN • ASSEMBLE: TEKS YOUR ASSESSMENTS AT-A-GLANCE CALENDAR SUGGESTED ROADMAPS • Create your Essential Questions
WHAT IS AN ESSENTIAL QUESTION? • An open ended, thought-provoking, higher order and an intellectually engaging question that points toward important transferable ideas, raises additional questions, requires support and justification and recurs over time. • What do you want your students to know “down the road”? What do you want them to remember?
WHICH ARE EQ’S?? • What steps did you follow to get your answer? • What do effective problem solvers do when they get stuck? • Is there ever a “just” war? • What key events sparked WWI? • What makes a story timeless? • What “truths” can we learn from fiction?
MORE EQ’s • What makes objects move the way they move? • What can artworks tell us about a culture or society? • How does what we measure influence how we measure? • Why do people move?
Understandings and EQ’s • Two sides of the same coin • Examples • (U) The geography, climate and natural resources of a region influence the economy and lifestyle of the people living there • (EQ) How does where you live influence how you live.
Understandings and EQ’s • Two sides of the same coin • Examples • (U) Dance is a language of shape, space, timing, and energy that can communicate ideas and feelings. • (EQ) How can motion express emotion?
Overarching Vs Topical • (O)—How are structure and function related? • (T)—How does the structure of various insects help them to survive? • (O)—What makes a system? • (T)—How do our various body systems interact? • (O)—What are common factors in the rise and fall of powerful nations? • (T)—Why did the Soviet Union Collapse?
Remember! Common Assessments • Not standardized tests • Teacher created, teacher-owned assessments that are collaboratively designed and scored • Comparison of student growth • Provides immediate feedback to students and teachers • Aligns assessment with instruction
Common Assessment The format of the assessment should match the goals being assessed and the reason for assessing! In other words, your assessment should match your instruction! (Backwards Design!)
