2. Description Owls have large forward-facing eyes and ear-holes, a hawk-like beak, a flat face, and usually a conspicuous circle of feathers, a facial disc, around each eye. Although owls have binocular vision, their large eyes are fixed in their sockets, as with other birds, and they must turn their entire head to change views.

3. Behavior Most owls are nocturnal, actively hunting for prey only under the cover of darkness. Several types of owl, however, are crepuscular, active during the twilight hours of dawn and dusk.

4. Barn Owl Both male and female barn owls have a speckled, reddish-brown body and white, heart-shaped face. While the male’s chest is predominantly white, the female’s chest is darker and heavily spotted. The species can approach 18 inches in height, with females being slightly larger than males.

6. Great Horned Owl The Great Horned Owl, Bubo virginianus, is a large owl native to North and South America. It is an adaptable bird with a vast range, though it is not as widespread as the Barn Owl. Hawk OwlThe Northern Hawk Owl (Surnia ulula) is a medium sized owl. The term "hawk" refers to its falcon-like wing shape and long tail.

7. Spotted Owl The Spotted Owl, Strix occidentalis, is a species of owl. It is a resident species of forests in western North America, where it nests in tree holes, old bird of prey nests, or rock crevices. The Barred Owl is a medium-sized gray-brown owl. They are round-headed with a whitish-brown facial disk that has brown trim.

8. Ending Some species of owls are endangered, and yet, hunters still poach them. Farmers use them as a liability, by using them to hunt rodents. Some people treat them as a useful animal, some people treat them as trophies. Instead of killing them, we need to help them.
