Chapter 1 Introduction to Chemistry
Chemistry: the study of matter and the changes that it undergoes
I. Matter and its Characteristics • Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space • Mass is a measurement that reflects the amount of matter
A. Mass and weight • Weight is a measure not only of the amount of matter but also of the effect of Earth’s gravitational pull on that matter http://www.exploratorium.edu/ronh/weight/
Gravitational force is not the same everywhere on Earth and actually becomes less as you move away from sea level • Scientist use mass to measure matter so they can accurately compare measurements across the world
B. Submicroscopic atoms • Most of matter is macroscopic – you do not need microscopes to see it • Matter can be broken down to more than 100 types of elements • Elements are made up of particles called atoms - atoms are so tiny, they are submicroscopic – they cannot be seen even with optical microscopes • The structure of matter is explained by atoms and the changes they undergo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4Tst9DZFPI
