  2. What are ethics? “Ethics is often described as knowing the difference between right and wrong, based on approved standards of social and professional behavior, and choosing to do what is right.” (Laberta, 36.)

  3. Ethical Principal “An ethical principle defines the standards that promote trust, fairness, good behavior and kindness. These principles are used as justification for considering an actor a rule to be morally right or wrong.” (Laberta, 37.)

  4. Guidelines for Computer Ethics Respect Yourself Don’t share passwords, or post anything on the internet that could reflect badly on yourself. Respect Others Don’t use computers to threaten or harass others and be respectful when using a shared computer. Respect Academic Integrity Give credit for information obtained through the internet, and obtain permission before copying pictures.

  5. Computer EthicsFor Computer Users Computers cause new ethical problems, as they allow users more freedom to access and share information. Users can make decisions that they were never able to make before, even though these decisions may or may not be ethical.

  6. Computer EthicsFor Organizations Companies have ethical responsibilities to their employees, customers and the general public.

  7. Ethical Responsibilities Organizations must protect and secure data from loss, damage, error and misuse. Should have disaster recovery plans in place in the case that a security breach occurs.

  8. Computer EthicsFor Computer Professionals There is a code of conduct forcomputer professionals developed by professional associations such as the Association for Computing Machinery. (ACM)

  9. Legal Implications Some unethical actions are also illegal. Examples of these are plagiarism, libeland software piracy.
