Opening Act: Friday 3/25 • Sit based on your Chamber/Committee Assignment from last class. If you were not here, see me for your Chamber/Committee Assignment. • The Senate is the half of the room by the accordion wall. • The House of Representatives is the half of the room by the bulletin boards • The houses will not interfere with each other • Within your “House” organize yourselves into your committees. Feel free to move desks so committee members can converse and conspire easily. • Quietly await further instructions
Agenda: Friday 3/25 • Congress Simulation Instructions • Senate & House Leadership Selection • Committee Planning • Begin Simulation • Assignment: None
Congressional Committees (review) • The Senate Committee for Health, Welfare, & Education • The Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee • The Senate Committee for the Environment • The House Committee for Commerce & Industry • The House Committee for Farming & Agriculture • The House Committee for Defense & Military • The House Committee for Transportation
Congressional Leadership • For the purposes of this simulation we are ignoring any party affiliation, you are solely worried about your committee, and passing legislation. However, each house needs to determine leadership. • Senate needs to select someone to play the role of the Vice President of the USA. • The House needs to select the Speaker of the House • Do this quickly, these people will be in charge of managing the events, debates and votes in their respective house. • See if anyone wants the job, if more than one student does, conduct a quick vote. • This person should be organized and willing to enforce the rules of congress during each session
Congress Simulation Rules • I am going to give each student a handout with the rules. This is a class set, I will be collecting them before you leave so I can use them for every block. DO NOT WRITE ON THEM, AND DO NOT TAKE THEM WITH YOU • We will go over this document as a class, and when we are finished I will pass out the information on each committee. You will then have 15-20 minutes to discuss your committee’s information, goals and points earned/lost
Congress Simulation Start • Everyone will be responsible for proposing at least 1 piece of legislation for their committee • If there is someone in your committee who already has an idea for a bill, send them to me for a bill form. As they fill it out, every committee member should be watching and possibly assisting. This will help prepare everyone for their turn.
