What is a wave? • A WAVE is anything that transmits energy from one place to another (either matter or empty space.) • TWO TYPES OF WAVES are: • MECHANICAL (sound, seismic, slinky, ocean waves) • ELECTROMAGNETIC (light) • (1) MECHANICAL: can only travel through a MEDIUM (a solid, liquid, or gas) • (2)ELECTROMAGNETIC: can travel through a MEDIUM or EMPTYSPACE (VACUUM)
Parts of a wave WAVELENGTH: the distance between the two waves. The WAVELENGTH of a wave will relate to the FREQUENCY of the wave (how many waves in a certain amount of time.) The CREST is the highest point your particles will travel This is the AMPLITUDE and is how high or low the particles move from the resting point. The dotted line is the RESTING POINT. ****write in notebook: See wave diagram in folder/on worksheet*** The TROUGH is the lowest point your particles will travel
Question Time • On the index card answer the following: • In order to have different types of Electromagnetic waves, which do you think has to change: FREQUENCY or AMPLITUDE and WHY?
ANSWERS TO TODAY’S ACTIVITY:(Springy Waves) • WHAT HAPPENS AS YOUR AMPLITUDE INCREASES? • THE PARTICLES MOVE FURTHER FROM THE RESTING POINT AND YOU HAVE MORE FORCE AND ENERGY PRESENT • WHAT HAPPENS AS WAVELENGTH DECREASES? • THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE WAVES DECREASES AND YOU INCREASE FREQUENCY. IF THE WAVELENGTH INCREASES, FREQUENCY DECREASES (INVERSELY PROPORTIONAL)
