Strangers Off the Coast: Early Journeys Early Exploration Page 30-31
Early Exploration • In 1524, Giovanni Verrazano and his crew landed on the coast of North Carolina, in the Outer Banks. • The purpose of the journey was to explore and find an easy way to sail around the world. • When the crew arrived they walked on the beach, tasted the oysters the natives were roasting, explored a bit, and then left. • We know this because Giovanni Verrazano wrote about his travels in a journal. (Primary Source) • Verrazano did not return to North Carolina but his voyage did change North Carolina forever. Many traders and explorers soon followed and settled in NC. • European merchants and rulers began to finance expeditions to explore the globe.
Exploration • Explorers first sailed down the West African coast , looking for gold and spices. They set out across the Atlantic and ran into the Americas. • Large numbers of Europeans began to sail to the Americas. Many brought enslaved Africans with them.
The Outcome • African, European, and Native American societies all had unique traditions and practices. As people from these cultures began building what would be North Carolina, many traditions were lost. However, cultures also blended together to create new ways of living. • To understand the cultures that shaped North Carolina, it is important to know about Africa, Europe, and the Americas before they became connected with one another.
Looking through historical lenses: Technology • Europeans developed strong, fast sailing ships and navigational technologies.
Discussion Questions • How did European technology change because of exploration? • Where were some reasons Europeans came to the Americas to explore? (Purpose) • What route did oceanic explorers take (From where did they come?) • How did trading affect the world socially? (Outcome) • Homework: Write summary for your notes.
