  1. Figurative language Tamaira Glover October 11,2011 5th period !

  2. Personification • An animal given human like qualities or an object given life like qualities. • example: sun’s smiling down, or the boat hugged the shore.

  3. Alliteration Consonant sounds repeated at the beginnings of words. Example: Caleb calls Chris ‘cause’ he's coming to California.

  4. Assonance • Repeated vowels sounds in a line or lines of a poem. • Example: I baked a cake and eat it .

  5. Hyperbole • Exaggeration often used for emphasis. • Example: man that’s a million times harder.

  6. Onomatopoeia • Words that imitate the sound they are naming. • Example: with a buzz or a ding or a hiss or a roar .

  7. Metaphor • A direct comparison of two unlike things. • Example: my words are like a river.

  8. Simile • A comparison of two things using “like” or “as”. • Example: smooth as jazz.

  9. Imagery • Most images are visual but they can also appeal to the sense touch taste or smell. • Example:emontial effect

  10. Consonance • Repetition of internal or ending consonant sounds close together • Locket ,thick

  11. Idiom • An expression used that has a different meaning from the literal meaning of its individual words. • Have the upper hand
