Undergraduate Economics Major Assessment Program Byron Gangnes (gangnes@hawaii.edu)
What we have done • Conducted a literature review of assessment activities in other Econ departments. • Established clear learning objectives with (at least potentially) measurable outcomes. • “Test drove” several assessment methods, including: • Began to make programmatic changes in response. • Working on adoption of ongoing assessment.
Test Driven Assessment Tools • Commercial Objective Testing. ETS Economics Assessment Exam for 400-level. • Objective Mini-Tests. Handful of objective questions for Intermediate Theory courses. • Course-Specific Objectives and Evaluation. Set course objectives and test. • Departmental Review of Students’ Work Product. Review essays with an eye to Dept learning objectives. • Surveys. For majors, graduating seniors, and recent graduates.
Successful assessment programs… • Start out small rather than making wholesale changes to the existing programs. Recognize needs may change. • Do not use tools that are prohibitively costly (faculty time, staff time, budget) to implement. • Do not use tools that alienate the faculty. Need for faculty “buy in.” • Aren’t afraid to try various tools and discard the ones that don’t work.
