OBJECTIVES • Define transcultural nursing and understand importance of cultural competence • Understand steps toward attaining cultural competence for nursing care • Gain a better understanding of what leads to lack of cultural competence • Understand the importance of education in providing transcultural nursing care • Know the importance of quality and safety improvements
WHAT IS TRANSCULTURAL NURSING? • “A substantive area of study and practice focused on comparative cultural care (caring) values, beliefs and practices of individuals or groups of of similar or different cultures” (Murphy, 2006).
INFLUENCE OF CULTURE • What is culture? • Culture is complex and broad • Includes: race, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic status • Cultural competence
STEPS TOWARD CULTURAL COMPETENCE • Adopt attitudes to promote transcultural nursing care • Develop awareness for cultural differences • Perform a cultural assessment
STATISTICS • Compared to Whites: • Blacks received worse care for 41% of quality measures • Hispanics received worse care for 39% of quality measures • Asians and American Indians/Alaska Natives received worse care for 30% of quality measure
IMPORTANCE TO NURSING • Helps reduce health disparities • Improve patient safety & communication • Foster trust between nurses and their patients • Allows nurses to individualize care • Promotes patient advocacy for diverse populations
