Objectives • Students will define horizontal/lateral violence and identify situations of nurse bullying. • Students will discuss possible causes of horizontal violence and what could potentially lead to horizontal violence. • Students will list the populations that are affected by horizontal violence. • Students will identify negative outcomes that arise from nurse bullying in the workplace. • Students will understand what interventions are taking place to eliminate horizontal violence.
Definition • Individuals are at the same level • Physical, verbal, or emotional • Series of undermining incidences over time • Covert • Underreported
Definition • Bully – one who publically or privately demeans another employee • power differential is present • Behavior is deliberate, intention to cause stress • Relational aggression • Unhealthy work environments due to bullying
Behaviors • Refusing to lend assistance • Intimidation • Incivility • Public humiliation • Withholding behavior • Silent treatment • Name-calling • Exclusion
