  1. “ACHIEVE Strength for Life”Bench Exercise Program

  2. How the Bench Program came about? We conducted a study to determine whether parks influence physical activity in adults

  3. To measure activity levels, we conducted the System for Observing Play and Recreation in Communities (SOPARC) for 7 days, 4 times a day, to determine physical activity levels in park users. 9am 1pm 5pm 7pm

  4. Overall we observed that hardly anyone was using the walking trail. We noticed that moms would bring their children to the playground and just sit on the bench while their children played. When asked why they were not using the trail, they told us they felt it was unsafe to leave their children unsupervised.

  5. Thus we decided to develop a strategy to increase physical activity levels in adults After several discussions with community members and park users, members of the CHART Team designed and produced a Bench Exercise Program that would provide a “Cue for Action” for moms to be more Physically Active in the park This 2’ x 3’ sign will be posted by all park benches, especially ones facing playgrounds

  6. Community Loves it!
