(Microsoft can’t think of everything.) • To improve or enhance design of programs • Inventiveness, anger or sheer frustration • Publicity and future commercialization

What is Available? • Almost anything you can imagine • Utilities to make your computer work better, safer, quicker or give you better access and control • Business programs and Office suites • Programs for Games, Hobbies & Fun Stuff • Handy programs/tools to make your work easier • Enhancements to programs

  4. Who Develops These Products? • Commercial enterprises hoping to build a market • Individual IT entrepreneurs looking for big bucks through small payments • Hobbyists and ‘Do Gooders” • Businesses using the product as a come-on or advertising medium

  5. Freeware PROS • Free • Often fills a niche or need too small for commercial development CONS • May have ads • May have spyware • May not be compatible with your OS

  6. Shareware PROS • Low cost • Demo – try before you buy CONS • May have ads or spyware • May not work as advertised
