Germany vsThe U.S. • Display menu by entrance • Men enter before women • Find table yourself, join someone else’s table • Address waiter/waitress as Herr Ober or Fraulein • Fork in left hand, knife in right • If you drink plain water, order leitungswasser (not mineralwasser) • Tip is included in bill • Paying with a check or credit card is not customary • Get menu at table • Enter in any order • Seated by host, don’t eat at other’s tables • Address waiter/ waitress by their name • Does not matter which hand is which • Get plain water • Tip is not included in the bill • Pay with whatever you have

General Information • Based off of tradition • Passed down generations • Modern American foods from Germany • Food is made to prevent spoiling (sauerkraut) • Biggest meal around noon • Cuisine is diverse from original region • Southwest: influenced by French • South cooking: extends to Switzerland and Austria

  4. Wurst • Blutwust, weisswurst, frankfurters (like hot dogs), salami, bratwurst, curry wurst, bouletten (hamburger) • Usually boiled, grilled, or raw • Preserved by soaking in vinegar and spices

  5. Bread and Butter (butterbrot) Sandwiches • Das wurstbrot-sausage • Das kasebrot-cheese • Das marmeladenbrot-jam • Das eierbrot-egg

  6. German Beer • Beer- made of barley malts, hops, yeast, and water • World known as “natural” and good

  7. Side Dishes • Potatoes-pan fried, pancakes, dumplings, salad, soup, sweet and sour, sweet apple • Cheese-named after region made in (Limburger, Munster, Tilsiter)

  8. Sweets • Pastries, chocolates, cakes • Coffee and cake time-4:00 • Breakfast : fresh foods from the bakery
