Tests look at three basic areas • Abilities: your capacity to work with numbers, words, diagrams and systems. • Attainment: what you actually know about an area. • Personality: how you are typically likely to act, covering motivation, values and reaction to authority

Test must be… • Reliable in that it is consistent in what it measures • Valid in that it does identify the attributes required • Are the tests fair? • Appropriate in how they are evaluated against the criteria for selection
Basic rules … • Feedback – feedback should always be given. If not offered, you must request it (part of their licensing agreement) • Openness – you must be aware that tests will be used and the procedure explained in advance. • Confidentiality – access to test results should be restricted to relevant parties Data protection Act)
