Totalitarianism Stalin’s USSR
Totalitarianism • A government that controls every aspect of life.
Traits of Totalitarianism • Ideology- set goals for the state, glorifies & justifies state actions • State Control of Individuals- demand loyalty, denies rights, state above individual • Enforcement-police terror, indoctrination, censorship, & persecution • Technology-mass propaganda, weapons
More Traits • State Control of Society- Controls all public life (art, education, housing, labor, religion, etc.) • One Party Rule- no other options • Dynamic Leader-unites the people, symbolizes the gov’t, & cult of personality
Stalin’s USSR • Stalin eliminated all enemies, real & imagined • 1937-1938 The Great Purge eliminated any threats to his power, thousands were put into labor camps or executed • Current estimates are 20 million were executed during his rule.
Propaganda • Censorship-the state controlled ALL media • Images & stories were all meant to glorify the state & leaders • Government controlled ALL education from nursery school through university • Religious persecution- Stalin opposed all religion, wanted people to worship the state, no divided loyalty
Economy • Command Economy-government controlled everything, means of production, prices, etc. • Five Year Plans- developed to modernize the USSR, set impossible goals, failed the people miserably, but did industrialize USSR • Collective farms-peasants forced to move
Society • More options- people had some social mobility, anyone could become anything if they worked & went to school • Women could do any job & the government provided child care but the women still had to care for the home & raise the children, it was a patriotic duty
Stalin’s Success • Stalin achieved complete control of the USSR • USSR was an industrial & political power in the world • He required complete conformity & obedience & stifled all creativity because it was a threat
