ECONOMICS GRADUATE PROGRAM • at • NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY • An interdisciplinary program offered by the Department of Economics (Econ) and the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ARE) • Encompasses two Colleges • College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) • College of Management (COM) • Gives students access to over 25 graduate courses and 50+ graduate faculty • Fields of specialization
DEGREE TRACKS • Master of Economics (non-thesis) • Applied Policy Analysis Track • 30 hours • Coursework Only • Requires ECG 505, ECG 506, ECG 561, ECG 562, ECG 580, ST 514 or ST 512 • 4 additional courses to include two from ECG • PhD Preparatory Track • 30 hours • Coursework Only • Requires ECG 700, ECG 703, ST 421-ST422, ECG 750 • 5 additional courses to include three from ECG (two at 7xx) • Master of Science (thesis) • Requires ECG 700, ECG 703, ST 421-ST422, ECG 750 • 5 additional courses to include three from ECG (two above ECG 705) • May include 6 hours of thesis research hours • Requires Thesis
DEGREE TRACKS • Doctoral Degree • Course Requirements • Requires 701, 702, 704, 705, 751, 752 or 753 • 6 additional field courses (4 must comprise two 2-course sequences) • Hour Requirements • 72 hours for those entering without a masters degree • 56 hours for those entering with a masters degree • Hours beyond those gained through coursework can be acquired through research credit hours • Other Requirements • Written Comprehensive Exams in Micro Theory and Macro Theory- Summer following completion of theory courses • Preliminary Oral Exam - Spring following completion of field courses • Dissertation Proposal Defense - Spring following completion of field courses • Final Oral Exam

PROGRESS THROUGH THE PROGRAM Non Thesis Masters (ME) Thesis Masters (MS) Follows identically with ME PhD Preparatory Track but allows substitution of thesis research/preparation hours for two free electives (NOT the 7xx electives). ECG 7xx level electives for MS must be field courses numbered above 705. Usually includes two 7xx in addition to 765.

NC RESIDENCY • Full information at http://www.ncsu.edu/grad/future-students/resident.html • Domestic students should apply for NC residency for tuition purposes after being in the state for at least 12 months • While there’s no guarantee that residency will be granted, the following actions will work in your favor. Begin these actions, where possible, at the beginning of the 12 month period • NC drivers license • Bank account • NC auto registration • Register to vote • Personal property tax (auto, etc) • State income tax • Home property tax • Involvement in community (professional organizations, religious organizations, volunteer work, etc.)
