Overview of NJCSMTE Programs Five Year, Combined Bachelor/Master Degree Programs BS/MA Scientist-Educator Track • Specialize in High School Teaching of Biology, Chemistry or Math • B.S. Science & Technology, M.A. Instruction & Curriculum • Field Experiences & Student Teaching BS/MS Scientist-Researcher Track • Specialize in Biotechnology to Work in Science Research Fields • Specialize in Computational Applied Mathematics to Work in Industry • Graduate Research Project Work MS Biotechnology Program • For students already holding a bachelor’s degree in science, we offer a convenient full- or part-time evening program BS/MD Drexel Scholar Program • 4 + 4 Linkage with Drexel University College of Medicine (Philadelphia PA), Kean’s NJCSTME & St. Peter’s University Hospital (New Brunswick NJ) • Second Language Proficiency & Service Learning • Clinical preceptorships at St. Peter’s University Hospital • Enter medical school at Drexel after the bachelor’s degree • Careers in family, general internal medicine and pediatrics
Bachelor of Science in Science & Technology • Years 1 & 2: Freshmen/Sophomore Core Curriculum • One week in July, Transition to Kean NJCSTME Course • Science & Applied Math Course Integration • Chemistry linked with Calculus I and II • Physics linked with Linear Algebra • Biology linked with Probability and Statistics • Science Labs coupled with Applied Mathematics Labs • Applying math to the solution of scientific problems • Computational analysis & modeling to study complex systems & behavior • Laptop computer provided for scholars from freshmen to senior year • Opportunities Beyond the Science Classroom • Science & Society Seminars and Guest Speaker Symposiums • Integrated Team Research Projects with Presentations • Community Outreach Endeavors • Grant-funded research opportunities with faculty
Junior and Senior Years 3 & 4 EDUCATOR TRACK • Biology Education • Chemistry Education • Math Education • SCIENTIST TRACK • Computational Applied Math • Biotechnology • DREXEL TRACK • Biomedicine • Preprofessional internship at St. Peter’s University Hospital Degree earned at the completion of Year 4: Bachelor of Science in Science & Technology Options in the areas of specialization above
NJCSTME’S Graduate Year 5 Curriculum Five Year Combined Bachelor/Master Program BS/MA Educator Track • Master of Arts Degree in Instruction & Curriculum • Student Teaching for certification in biology, chemistry or math secondary education BS/MS Scientist Track • Master of Science Degree • Specialize in Biotechnology to Work in Science Research Fields • Specialize in Computational Applied Math to Work in Industry • Graduate research project work BS/MD Drexel Scholars Program • Upon graduation from Kean’s NJCSTME, enter Drexel University College of Medicine • Medical students return to St. Peter’s Hospital for at least one 3rd year clerkship & one 4th year rotation
Academic Standards & Guidance • Academic Advisors who are NJCSTME faculty • An interdisciplinary team of scientists & educators • Peer-tutoring freely available • Academic Standards for NJCSTME five year, combined bachelor/master degree programs • Freshman & Sophomore Year In State Tuition Paid • Must Maintain 3.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average • 3 Additional Years Tuition Paid for Educator Track • (Must teach in NJ for 3 years upon graduation) • Scholarship Consideration for Scientist Track options in biotechnology & computational math for Yrs 3–5 • Academic Standards for BS/MD Drexel Scholar Program • BS/MD Drexel Program is a flat rate tuition program • Take MCAT in junior year and score a minimum of 31 • Earn bachelor’s degree with minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 • No less than a C in any course (no courses repeated or withdrawn)
NJCSTME Admission Infofor Freshmen Entering Sept. 2010 • Application for NJCSTME Five Year Bachelor/Master Degree Programs Due on or before March 1, 2010 • Submit a Kean University undergraduate admission application • Submit a NJCSTME supplemental application • Official High School transcript (minimum high school G.P.A. 3.0+) • SAT score test results • Combined minimum SAT math & verbal score of 1100 • (550+ in math subsection) • Letter of recommendation from a science &/or mathematics teacher • Demonstrated interest in science & math; taken yearly in high school • Personal interview may be required
NJCSTME Admission Infofor Freshmen Entering Sept. 2010 Application for Drexel BS/MD Scholar Program Due on or before Dec 8, 2009 • Graduation from a U.S. high school (minimum high school GPA of 3.5) • Satisfactorily passed (or in progress) high school prerequisite courses • 4 years Math + 4 years English • 3 years Science (biology, chemistry, physics) • Combined minimum SAT math/critical reading score of 1270 (subset scores no less than 560) • Demonstrated interest in science and medicine • Interviews upon request of the Biomedicine Selection Committee
New Home of the New Jersey Center for Science, Technology & Mathematics Education Opening in 2010 The NJCSTME site is on Morris Avenue in Union, NJ, directly opposite the Kean University Main Campus and adjacent to Historic Liberty Hall, less than 2 miles from Garden State Parkway
