  2. Definition • Diversity/multicultural education: Education that takes into consideration a wide range of students with different backgrounds which influence learning.

  3. Definitioncontinued • Diversity comes in the form of different religious, socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, different cognitive abilities, and different age, race and gender.

  4. Definitioncontinued • Cultural backgrounds overlap with diversity and also include factors such as: language, dress, food, political ideology and beliefs. Therefore, multicultural would include a variety of all the above listed attributes.

  5. I believe that schools should not have to provide the curriculum in any language other than English. Offering assistance in learning English, as a second language, can be something extra offered in schools as needed. For the most part, students need to be placed in their regular classroom the majority of the day. Children will learn English by being exposed to it on a daily basis. Bilingual Education

  6. Additional tutoring of ESOL should speed up the process and be used as a resource. Keeping a “language minority” child in the regular classroom should benefit the child in several ways. They are not singled out but allowed to integrate into the classroom with their peers. They are exposed to exactly the same material as everyone else. Bilingual Educationcontinued

  7. Strategies • Deliberately hurting a child in my classroom will not be tolerated. Whether this hurt comes from words or fists doesn’t matter. This will be one of my classroom rules that is posted and made well aware of.

  8. I believe that children want to help others in need and this will foster that kind of behavior. Also it has become somewhat common today to have different language speaking children in the same classroom. Bilingual Educationcontinued

  9. Strategiescontinued To expand on that, I will try to incorporate “differences” in my curriculum. By creating opportunities to learn about different cultures and races within any subject area, teachers can reinforce acceptance and tolerance of the diversity present in our world. A show and tell or other types of opportunities for students to share some of their culture with the class might be considered.

  10. Awareness Some of the ways that teachers can become aware of the varying differences between their students could include: • Careful observation • Have students write about themselves • Talk to previous teachers and administrators • Do some research of your own

  11. Awarenesscontinued • Encourage parent/teacher conferences • Have lunch in the student cafeteria • Assist with or observe after school activities • Attend school sports events
