Introduction • In Jesus’ Sermon on The Mount, He warned against shallow outward righteousness • He also warned against hypocrisy, acting righteous for approval of men • Then, He warns of deceptive false prophets who will lead us to destruction • Finally, He warns of deceiving ourselves into thinking we are doing God’s will when we are not
Warning Against Shallow Righteousness and Hypocrisy • Mat 5:20 "For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. • Mat 5:21 "You have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.'
Warning Against Shallow Righteousness and Hypocrisy • Mat 5:22 "But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.
Warning Against Shallow Righteousness and Hypocrisy • Mat 6:1 "Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.

Warning Against Self Deception • Professed disciples are deceived • These disciples are zealous, diligent and partially obedient • Surprised at Judgment day • The Lord requires complete loving obedience to Him • Why does this self deceit happen? • How can we prevent deceiving ourselves?
