LAKE VÕRTSJÄRV: general description • Area 270 km2 • Mean depth 2.8 m • Maximum depth 6 m • Catchment area 3374 km2 • (incl. lake area) • Water volume 0.75 km3 • Average water turnover rate: • 1 year • Ice cover 135 days a year • Status: eutrophiclake • Natura 2000 pSCI and SPA
Main problems at Lake Võrtsjärv • Eutrophication • Big water level changes • Late winter oxygen deficiency • Decrease of fish production

What has been done already? • 50-year scientific database • The lake was turned from ruffe lake to pikeperch lake during 1960s • External nutrient load was decreased • Regular state monitoring since 1989 • Lake Võrtsjärv Agency was founded in 2000
