  3. LAKE VÕRTSJÄRV: general description • Area 270 km2 • Mean depth 2.8 m • Maximum depth 6 m • Catchment area 3374 km2 • (incl. lake area) • Ice cover 135 days a year • 35 fish species • Status: eutrophiclake • Natura 2000 pSCI and SPA

  4. Main fields of use • Professional fishery • Recreation • Tourism

  5. Main problems at Lake Võrtsjärv • Big water level changes • Eutrophication • Water quality • Overgrowing (expansion of reeds!) • The lake is “hidden” and “reserved”

  6. To change Lake Võrtsjärv from an unfamiliar lake to wellknown place, the seven local authorities surrounding the lake Established Lake Võrtsjärv Foundation in 2000 Key word: sustainable development

  13. Conservation holidays • Organised mainly by ELF • 2004, volunteers from Germany and Estonia • At Emajõgi R. outlet and at L. Mustjärv • Conservation works combined with learning the local cultural heritage
