  3. Figurative Meaning • Using words in a way that goes beyond their dictionary (denotation) meaning • Metaphor is a primary example

  4. Technical Meaning • Words specific to a particular topic • Computer terms are a primary example

  5. Connotation • Implied meaning or the emotional weight the word carries

  6. Purpose • In writing is to inform, persuade, or entertain

  7. Informational passages • Present a series of facts or observations to the reader

  8. Persuasive Essays • Designed to influence a reader’s thinking about a particular topic

  9. Author’s View • Supported by evidence or by pointing out the flaws in their opponents viewpoint

  10. Tone • Author’s attitude toward a particular subject or audience

  11. Word Choice • Key to understanding an author’s tone • Also contributes to the style and structure of the passsage

  12. Topic Sentence • Main Idea of the paragraph

  13. Supporting details • Examples that support the topic sentence

  14. Transitional sentence • Introduces links to other sentences • Indicates a shift in an author’s argument • States the conclusion of the paragraph
