Afrocentric School Controversy • 40% drop-out rate of black students in Toronto • Gang activities endanger pupils • Other specialized schools programmes already exist (e.g., gay & lesbian high school, aboriginal high school) • Purported benefits of an Afrocentric curriculum • Teach the student’s heritage • Increase the student’s pride

  2. Objections to an Afrocentric Curriculum • It serves to stigmatize, ghettoize black students • Other ethnic/racial groups excel without special curricula • Children have to learn how to function in a multi-cultural society • This curriculum or school will further marginalize black students

  3. Issues for Discussion • What is missing from this debate? • Do students exposed to an Afrocentric curriculum excel? • What should be the comparison group? • What variables might be important to control or handle statistically?

  4. Are We Safe? • What is the nature of the problem? • How much of a problem exists? (Extent) • Why is it a problem? • When does the problem occur? • Where? • Whom does it affect? • How do we measure the problem?

  5. What Solution(s) Are Proposed to Handle the Problem? • Why might we want to develop an evaluation? • How would we assess the solution(s): program evaluation • What role does cost effectiveness play in determining a program or solution? • Who would fund a program? Why would they? What is the funder’s interest in the problem?
