  1. CAR Workshop @KReSIT 1st Dec. 2003

  2. Core-group on Automotive R&D (CAR) • Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India. • Constituted by Dr.R. Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Adviser to Govt. of India in April 2003 • Comprises of senior people from Indian automobile and auto-component makers, academia. • Goal: • prepare roadmap for cooperative R&D programme to support the Indian Automobile Industry • identify areas where intellectual property protection will enhance the position of industry.

  3. Six Expert-Panels • Embedded (Control) Systems • Telematics • Hydrogen & Alternate Energy Technologies • Advanced Materials • Low-cost Safety • Recyclability of auto systems & components

  4. Tasks • Leading to articulation of “roadmap” for cooperative R&D in the Indian Automotive Sector. • CAR will: • Create and update list of technologies critical to development of world class automotive industry. • Create and update list of experts for "Technology Board" • Develop "position paper" describing critical technology   • Draw up prioritized list of R&D programs .

  5. Embedded Systems Panel • Vehicle Software Architecture: • sensors and actuators, black-boxes and sub-systems & communication • Modeling/architecture of these elements • Interface characteristics, protocols, etc. • Re-use, modular design, flexibility • Safety and predictability • Automobile sub-systems • Sub-systems like X-by-wire, navigation, automatic suspension, etc. • Vehicle Software and Tools: • Simulators/ test-beds to test/ evaluate systems • Tools for rapid prototyping, verifying, exploring hardware/software co-design.

  6. Embedded Systems • Real-time Systems • Real-time mechanisms for distributed control and communication network • Bus design and provisioning and protocol issues. • Power Electronics & Drives Group • Software interface specifications for electric propulsion and energy systems • Specification/design of electric propulsion systems • Software interface to the vehicle software system. • Dependability/Safety/Graceful degradation • Dependability and related functional requirements • Graceful degradation • Tools for verification of software and testing.

  7. Embedded Systems • Communication Network • Design and build network hardware/software + messaging system for prototype vehicle. • Automobile Curriculum Group: • Develop curricula for CSE/EE courses promoting automobile sector as user of embedded systems • Prepares students for career in the automobile sector.

  8. Pre-competitive medium/long term projects • > three years in duration • Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) systems • Motor control (control and power) • System control in conjunction with ECU • Battery charge control and health monitor • Vehicle body electronics • Data flow protocols • Multidisciplinary activity • Needs modeling/ simulation tools, embedded controllers, power-electronics systems, work on IC engine mapping and control, vehicle systems modeling and optimization. • Need algorithm-based virtual model that is processor-neutral and we need to work towards an open source component library. Industry partners will be free to use these components to shorten their product development cycles by 50-70% of current estimates
