  2. Background …. • Link between employability & good health • Impact on ability of NHS to recruit & retain skilled & diverse workforce • Employment in healthcare sector to grow by 33% over next 5 years • Need for a diverse workforce to meet the needs of culturally diverse communities

  3. Aims …. • Raise aspirations and attainment in school years 9 – 13 / post 16 • Raise the profile of NHS career opportunities • Widen participation in healthcare professions & address lack of diversity and narrow socio-economic backgrounds of applicants • Ensure sustainability of activities

Key Objectives…. • Facilitate progression into healthcare professions • Work in partnership with qualified and undergraduate healthcare professionals • Work in partnership with relevant agencies and organisations, eg PCTs, Acute Trusts, SHAs, WDCs • Strengthen vocational progression pathways • Develop mechanisms to ensure sustainability

  5. Programme of Activity • Curriculum Support for PSHCE – Years 9 to 13 • Provision of Careers Information & Vocational Experience • Work Experience • Mentoring • Vocational Progression Mapping • Targeted Outreach for Specific Professions

Schools and Colleges Careers Programme Health & Social Care • Year 9 (13-14yrs) • Group of about 10 pupils identified in each school by aim higher co-ordinators and science teachers • Each group offered a visit to the Thackray Medical Museum followed by an interactive careers talk - careers literature available • Individual pupils followed up for mentor support • Year 10 (14-15yrs) • Identified groups invited to take part in workshop based ‘careers days’ in the Trust • Careers literature available • Individual pupils followed up for mentor support • Year 11 (15-16yrs) • Identified groups invited to attend High Education focus days on medicine, professions allied to medicine and nursing and midwifery. • Individual pupils followed up for mentor support • Trust’s work experience programme explained

  7. The Leeds NHS Health & Well Being Programme • Health Issues Unit: • Drugs • Contraception • Sexual Health • Pregnancy • Parenting • Personal Well Being Unit: • Transition into Adulthood • Mental Health • Personal Stress • Harassment • Help & Information • Support to others

RESULTS FROM EVALUATION • over 1500 young people gained accredited GCSE level certificates • young people enjoyed and said programme increased their enthusiasm for learning in general • school tutors confirmed positive effect of programme on achievement and behaviour • young people wanted more NHS input • Raising awareness, aspirations and attainment

Yorkshire and the Humber • Bradford (Example) • Tong School Year 9 30 students invited to Thackray day • Year 10 20 students invitied to Careers Day • Year 11 15 students attended a focus day at Bradford University • Professions Allied to Medicine, Nursing and Midwifery • Year 10 20 young people taking part in the Health & Well Being Programme • Other areas involved: Barnsley (Edward Sheerian School), Bridlington (Bridlington School), Scarborough (Pindar School). • Possibilities for next year: Scunthorpe,Wakefield and Airedale.

Schools and Colleges Careers Programme Achievements (September 2003-present) • 300 young people received careers talks in schools • 261 young people have had Thackray Medical Museum Visits • 205 young people have had workshop based careers days in the Trust • 86 young people have attended University Focus Days • 55 NHS staff trained as mentors • 46 young people mentored by NHS staff • 419 clinical work experience placements

Regional IAG resource • Based at St. James’s University Hospital • Open to staff and public during office hours Monday-Friday • Comprehensive careers advice and information • Information on work experience and mentoring • Local college and university prospectuses • Information on NHS vacancies • Practical advice on filling in application forms and interview skills • Details of other statutory/voluntary agencies offering education/employment related help and information • Information on in-house staff development opportunities • Information on the Trust’s clerical bank and application procedures

  12. NHSU Funded Careers Programme Pilot (Non-Clinical areas) Areas covered: Portering Supplies Administration and Clerical Medical Records Schools involved: Agnes Stewart Church of England High School Elmete Wood School Primrose High School Rodillian School
