The Course • Designed for current and future K-12 teachers • Partly about mastering computing technologies that are used in schools • Partly about understanding the ideas and problems that shape how computing technologies get used in schools • Partly about learning to design meaningful uses of computing technologies for K-12 classrooms
Learning to Teach with Computer Technology We know that: • It takes progressive refinement • It takes a long time (years, not weeks or months) • Few teachers do it alone • Most have ongoing support from peers in their schools, administration, and the surrounding community.
Course Goals • Learn the basics of how computers work • Learn about common computer applications found in schools today • Feel comfortable about trying new things with computing and networking technologies • Experience technology in your own learning • Begin developing a critical stance on uses of technology in schools • Online and class discussions • Position paper
Accomplished Through A combination of • Discussions • Labs • Mastery assignments • Readings, research and written work …all intended to develop your understanding of computing technology and its use in schools
Assessments • No final exam! • 4 - Reading responses (4 x 5% = 20%) • 5 - Assignments (60%) • 2 x 5% = 10% • 1 x 10% = 10% • 2 x 20% = 40% • Position paper (20%)
Expectations • Regular and timely class attendance and participation • Individual work and accountability • Timely assignment submissions - Late assignments deducted at a rate of 10% PER DAY. • Unless prior arrangements are made, assignments are due by midnight prior to class • Assignments will be handed back the following week in class
Support • We will give you as much time as possible to work on your technical projects in class, but... • You will need to spend additional time in this lab • 1 day per week on campus will not be enough, unless you are technically self-sufficient • We can only support you technically if you work in the CET using the applications we know
Technology • Maillist (educ-260@sfu.ca) • Website (http://www.sfu.ca/educ260) • WebCT (http://webct.sfu.ca/) • Conceptual and administrative questions • Resource, news and event sharing • Peer support • Formal reading response discussions • Turnitin (http://www.turnitin.com) • Various applications in the CET
Contact Information • Stephanie Chu • Email stephanie@sfu.ca • Phone 604.268.7464 • Office hours • Thursdays 4:20 to 5:00 and by appointment • Irina Tzoneva • Email itzoneva@sfu.ca • Office hours in the CET (tbd)
For Next Week • Read Tiene & Ingram (2001) • Pages 25-35 • Chapters 2, 3, & 4 • Review contents in the course web site • Post questions in WebCT (& familiarize yourself with the system) • Be ready to do Assignment #1 in class
