Principles • The source or origin of anything; • A fundamental truth or law of action; • Inform our choice of values, morals and ethics.
Values Our ideas about how things should be, i.e. the ideals we hope to strive for. Divided into: 1) Desirable life goals (happiness or success); 2) Guiding principles (e.g. hard working or honesty).
Values 1) Ranked in importance from morally crucial: • honesty • tolerance • freedom • justice 2) To slight non - moral preferences: • a kind of music • style of dress we prefer.
Picking values • In a haphazard, piece-meal fashion from: • Friends • Parents • The media • Teachers • Popular heroes • Clergy
Benefits of knowing your principles and values Enable us: 1) To make informed choices and judgments; 2) To predict likely outcomes of our actions; 3) Helps us avoid information overload.
Values influencing behavior • A strong value of achievement and success: a general expectation of a person’s behavior: • goal oriented; • proactive; • hard working; • gaining the skills necessary to get what one want;
