HOW PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH ARE RELEVANT TO THE NEW ZEALAND CURRICULUM IN TERMS OF THE PRINCIPLES, VALUES AND KEY COMPETENCIES
Principles, Values and Key Competencies • Outlined in the New Zealand Curriculum (2007) on p. 9, 10, 12 and 13 are the principles values and key competencies. These embody beliefs about what is important is a school’s curriculum and also guide how a school’s curriculum is delivered.
In the New Zealand Curriculum (NZC) (2007) it explains that “the inter-dependant and inter-related concepts of Hauroa, attitudes and values are well aligned to the vision and intent of the New Zealand curriculum (2007) and the Key Competencies. The need for teachers in physical education and health is to underpin teaching with these concepts while providing learning opportunities across four strands and within seven key areas of learning. This gives physical education teachers the ability to ensure that the key competencies, principles and values of the NZC (2007) are addressed.” (Gillespie-Key Competencies reading)
We agree with Gillespie that physical education and health teachers have the ability to address the principles, values and key competencies outlined in the NZC in a way that other subjects would struggle to teach. Students are able to demonstrate these aspects making physical education and health relevant subjects to any school’s curriculum.
