  2. PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  3. Holy Orders “Let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood.” First Letter of St. Paul 2:5

  4. Origins of the Priesthood • Can be found in the Old Testament: one of the tribes of ancient Israel, tribe of Levi, was set apart for priestly service (Numbers 3:5-10) • After his Resurrection, the Apostles realized that everything the priesthood of the Old Testament pointed toward was fulfilled in Jesus Christ. • The early Church realized that Jesus was a “high priest” “Christ came as a high priest of the good things that have come.” Hebrews 9:11

Apostles took leadership roles in the early Christian communities • They appointed successors know as Bishops (overseers) • They choose men of certain qualities to help them, they became know as deacons, Greek for service. • The first priest were elders in the communities who would help Eucharist- they were also know as presbyters, Greek for elders. • Unique responsibilities fall into 3 areas: teaching, divine worship & Church leadership

  6. Who can receive Holy Orders? • Be a baptized male of excellent character • Have an interior and exterior call (desire to serve) • Have the necessary knowledge of the nature of Holy Orders • Be the proper age, currently 24 • Commitment to lifelong celibacy, except permanent deacons who can marry before, but not after • Study theology and be trained in his office

Minister of Holy Orders • Bishops are the ministers of Holy Orders • Can only be ordained chosen for the role by the Pope • They have power to ordain other bishops, priest and deacons. • Given the power to sanctify, teach and rule in union with the Pope • Blesses sacred oils, chief teachers, provided supports/direction to parishes, celebrates Confirmation (unless special permission is given)

  8. Priests, co-worker with Bishops • Priests work with the bishop of a diocese • Responsible for the spiritual life of the diocese by being assigned to a parish • Celebrates all the sacraments except Confirmation, blesses marriages, baptizes, presides over funerals • Most important duty is to offer Mass • Some parish priests are members of a religious order • Live a celibate life, can dedicate his mind, heart and time entirely to service of God

  9. Ministry of Deacons • Is ordained for works of service and liturgical ministry • Assists with celebration of Eucharist, proclaims the Gospel, gives homilies and distributes communion, baptize, bless marriages and presides over funerals • 2 types of deacons • Permanent – must be over 35, married or celibate, a lay male who fells the call to serve • Transitional – are men who are on their way to be ordained as a priest
