Who is Sophie Masloff? • Religion is Jewish • In Democratic Party • Dad died when she was 2 years old • Was married to Jack Masloff (security guard, died in 1992) • Had only one child (Linda Busia) • The 55th mayor of Pittsburgh • Two of her favorite Presidents were Bill Clinton and Harry Truman • Currently 93 years old Picture of Sophie on her 90th birthday

Where was she born and where has she worked in her life before politics? • Born in the Hill District • Graduated from Fifth Avenue High School • First job was bookkeeper for a butter and egg company located in the Strip District • Lives in her Squirrel Hill Home This is a picture of Sophie in high school

  4. Why did Sophie Masloff enter politics? • Was inspired at 17 to become a political activist when she saw first lady Eleanor Roosevelt dedicate the Bedford Dwellings housing project in Pittsburgh Eleanor Roosevelt

  5. When did she become significant to Pittsburgh? • Began as a civil servant in Pittsburgh government (at the age of 18) • She was elected as Pittsburgh city council in 1976 • Later elected as City Council President • Took office on May 6,1988 (after Richard Caliguiri died) • Reelected in November 1989 • She was 70 years old when she went into office

What did she accomplish while in office? • She tried to keep the Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball team from moving to a different city • She suggested that the Steelers and Pirates have their own stadiums since they were sharing one • She had controversial plans that became known as the Fifth and Forbes Project • Privatized many costly assets of the city of Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh Zoo, National Aviary, Phipps Conservatory, Schenley Park Golf Course) • Was a major help to Bill Clinton’s Presidential Campaign in Western Pennsylvania

How was she a good mayor? • Was financially responsible and kept the city within a budget • Had foresight for the future of the city (the Fifth Forbes Project and separate fields for the cities’ teams) • Handled the challenge of becoming the mayor all of a sudden • Being reelected showed that the people of Pittsburgh thought she did well while in office

  8. Sophie supports Hillary Clinton Sophie Masloff supported Hillary Clinton in the 2008 Presidential Campaign. She was a superdelegate to the 2008 Democratic National Convention. Due to her health she could not attend the Convention. This is the first Convention since 1960 that she Missed.

  9. Sophie Masloff Way Sophie Masloff got a street named after her once she was out of office. The street is right by PNC Park. This is special because a separate stadium for the Pirates was one of her goals.
