  1. BELIEVE THE GOOD NEWS • Mark 1:14-15 • Mark 1:14-15 14Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” • UNDER THE RULE OF GOD • KEY OBSERVATION: Mark tells us that Jesus was • “proclaiming the Gospel — Good News — of the Kingdom of God” • KEY INSIGHT: There is more than one kingdom in the universe.

  2. There is the Kingdom of God — • Characterized by LIFE and LIGHT • There is the kingdom of this world — • Characterized by DEATH and DARKNESS • KEY QUESTION: Just what, or where, is the Kingdom of God? • KEY INSIGHT: The Kingdom of God is wherever God is King. • IN LIGHT OF THAT I want us to see a very simple, yet very important truth that is set forth here -

  3. KEY OBSERVATION: To be under the rule of God is NOT bad news. • It’s good news. • ILLUSTRATE: The night I received the Lord thoughts like this rushed through my head – • “If you become a Christian — it is going of be the end of life – carry a 10 lbs. Bible, listen to horrible music, drink milk and go to bed at 8:00pm!” • But here was the deciding question — How can I fear the King of the Kingdom when He bears the scars of His love for me?

  4. Would you note with me something that really is Good News – • Jesus doesn’t set up a bunch of religious hoops to jump through. • What He asks is two things • 1.) REPENT • KEY INSIGHT: “Repent” is from the Greek word Metanoia. • It literally means “a change of mind.” • KEY QUESTION: What do we have to change our minds about?

  5. PRIMARILY – We have to change our minds regarding how we live – • Until coming to Christ our lives are lived for self. • We set ourselves up as God. • CRUCIAL POINT: If we want to be in the Kingdom of God — if we want to go to heaven — we have to go 180 degrees in the opposite direction of a life lived for self • THAT is what it means to REPENT • ILLUSTRATION: If you want to go to New York you have to leave Sacramento. • You can want to go to New York all you want

  6. But you will never get to New York unless you turn your back on Sacramento and leave Sacramento. • Repent is not a popular message. • But the same holds true for Heaven. • There needs to be a moment when you change the direction of your life. • If people end up forever OUTSIDE of the Kingdom of God it will be because they would not repent. • People will say — Christianity is pretty hard to believe — The Bible is hard to understand. • YES — There are some things in the Bible that are HARD to understand.

  7. But REPENT and BELIEVE are not in that category! • I have shared the Good News with a lot of people over the years • You believe that Jesus lived – died and rose again. WHAT is keeping you from being a Christian? • I don’t want God telling me what I can or can’t do. • 1.) REPENT • 2.) BELIEVE THE GOOD NEWS • KEY INSIGHT: The message of the Good News is this -

  8. Jesus died in your place for your sins and three days later He came out of the grave. • THIS MORNING we CELEBRATE that EVENT! • This is not some early Spring get together in which we talk about the possibility of eternal life — the possibility of hope beyond the grave • This is the celebration of an EVENT in HISTORY that is supported by incontrovertible evidence. • NOW — Because of His Resurrection life we have a living hope. • CRUCIAL INSIGHT: There is NO Good News if Jesus is not raised from the dead.

  9. Listen to what Paul wrote in the 1st Century AD to a group of Christians who in a place called Corinth - • 1 Cor 15:3-4; 14; 17 KJV 3For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures….. 14And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. …. 17And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. • The death of Jesus is of no value to save us if Jesus is not risen. • You see the meaning of the cross is this –

  10. God became manand paid the infinite price for the penalty of the sins of the world. • There He provided Himself as • Our SUBSTITUTION — wounded for OUR transgressions, crushed…. • Our PROPITIATION — appeased the wrath of God that we deserve • Our EXPIATION — removal of the defiling presence and power of sin • Our REDEMPTION — By His blood delivered us sins penalty and power • Our JUSTIFICATION — “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” • Our RECONCILIATION — Col 1:21-22 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death,

  11. The thing that validates Jesus as being God who became man to accomplish ALL of that — is His Resurrection. • If Jesus is still in the tomb • He is no different than Buddha or Mohammed • And He is powerless to save anyone from their sins. • Rom 4:25 KJV Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. • ILLUSTRATION: The pre-electronic banking letters from the bank with check stamped – NSF

  12. NOT RELIGIOUS • Jesus came and died for the sins of mankind and rose again for their justification. • Anyman or woman who is willing to • REPENT - turn form living for self and turn to Him and ask Jesus to forgive them • And BELIEVE the Good News, will have eternal life! • CRUCIAL INSIGHT: That is not Religious Activity! • That’s an exercise of the heart!

  13. EXAMPLE: The thief on the cross – • He was mocking Jesus along with the other thief. • Suddenly - “Lord when come into your Kingdom, will you remember me?” • What at change of mind! (Repent) • THIS GUY could offer NOTHING in terms of Religious activity! • His hands were nailed to a cross. • He couldn’t take communion or be baptized. • He couldn’t do any of the things people think they need to do to go to heaven.

  14. But in his heart he repented! • And in his heart he believed! • And what an amazing faith! • One man on a cross looked at another man on a cross and believed that the other man was a King with a Kingdom. • Jesus said, “You will be with me.” • “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” • Resurrection Day 2009 – What an awesome day to BELIEVE THE GOOD NEWS!

  15. It can be the day that YOU experience the power of God to SAVE you. • Eph. 1:18-22 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might 20that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church,

  16. It can be the day that YOU go from DEATH to LIFE! • Eph 2:5even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
