Nelson Honey - the company • Nelson Honey was formed in 1973. Managing Director Philip Cropp is a fourth generation bee-keeper and so you could say he has honey in his blood. • Nelson Honey and Marketing (NZ) Ltd is located 45 minutes south of Nelson in the beautiful Motupiko valley • Nelson Honey has in excess of 3000 hives located throughout the back-country areas of New Zealand’s South Island. • Nelson Honey is export approved and operates under a Risk Management Programme (RMP). Exports represent approximately 60% of total Nelson Honey sales and are growing.
Active Manuka Honey • It is well known that honey has antibacterial activity and that this activity varies tremendously from one honey to another. • Manuka honey has been found to contain additional antibacterial properties not found in other honey. The Manuka bush - Leptospermum scoparium is found exclusively in NZ and grows uncultivated in back-country areas. • Dr Peter Molan developed a method for testing the level (or potency) of the antibacterial properties present in each batch of honey. This method is used at the DHM laboratory in the North Island.
DHM Laboratory Certificate • DHM laboratory conduct “Activity test” using the method developed by Peter Molan at the University of Waikato in NZ. • The test measures the level of Non-Peroxide Activity present in the honey.
