Piggy Bank Creations Long ago, household pots were made out of a clay called “pygg” which was an orange clay. It was used because metal was expensive and hard to find at the time. So whenever a family had coins to save, it was put into a “pygg” jar. Over time, these little savings jars became known as pygg banks.
Later on, craftsmen were asked by households to make pygg banks. Misunderstanding the term, the potters crafted banks in the shape of pigs and painted them likewise. These pig banks soon became popular, and even today piggy banks (shaped as pigs) are found around the world throughout many different cultures.
One bank in Idaho even sponsored a contest to see who could create the best piggy bank.
