  2. Pre-Test: 1) Car for sale. 2) At what time do stores close in Spain? 3) Where are CD´s sold? (discos compactos) 4) Frenchisspoken in France. 5) Day of the dead is celebrated on November 1 and 2.

  3. “se”: The pronoun “se” in Spanish can be used to avoid specifying the person who is doing the action.

  4. Placing “se” before the verb makes the sentence ambiguous / general.

  5. Impersonal Se When used without a noun, it gives the sentences/phrase the meaning of: “they, one, or you” • Se trabaja mucho en esta escuela. • Se vive bien en esta ciudad. • Se come bien en esta casa.

  6. Passive Se • Whenusedwithobjects (nouns) itimpliesthatsomething“is done”,without specifying a specific person. • Se vendepan en la panadería. • Se reparan computadoras. • Día de los Muertos se celebra en México y Guatemala.

  7. Ejemplos:  Se hablaespañol = Spanishisspoken (here)  Se vendecoche = Car for sale  Se alquila apartamento = Apartmentforrent

  8. Howto use: If referring to ONE thing, use the USTED form of the verb: • Sevendecarro. = Car for sale If referring to MORE than ONE thing, use the USTEDES form of the verb: Sevendencarros. = Cars for sale

  10. ¿Cierto o Falso? • Se habla español en Brasil. • Se puede esquiar en Argentina en julio. • En España se cena después de las nueve. • Se permite comer en la biblioteca. • Se venden los refrescos de Coke en la cafetería.

  11. Commonly used verbs with the impersonal “se” • Alquilar / Rentar= to rent • Vender = sell • Necesitar = to need • Reparar= to repair • Celebrar = to celebrate • Hablar = to speak • Servir = to serve • Permitir= to allow, to permit
