What words did you pick? • Fairness; Protection; Taxes; Peace; Rights; Property; Freedom • [12] “No [tax] nor aid shall be imposed on our kingdom, unless by common counsel…” • [30] “No sheriff or bailiff of ours, or other person, shall take the horses or carts…” • [39] “No freeman shall be taken or imprisoned…or exiled or in anyway destroyed, nor will we go upon him nor send upon him, except by the lawful judgment of his peers…”
Some Ideas from the Magna Carta • The Magna Carta was the source of many of the important ideas embodied in founding documents of the United States; ie. The Declaration of Independence and our Bill of Rights • Idea 1: Rule of Law-Laws exist, and all citizens must obey them. The king is not above the law. • Idea 2: The king is the nations leader and authority, his vassals have both the right and the responsibility to check or limit his power. • Idea 3: The king cannot force extra tax without the consent of his counsel. • Idea 4: Private property cannot be taken by the king without the owners consent. • Idea 5: Someone accused of a crime cannot be condemned by the king. There must be a process for hearing both sides and making fair judgment—a jury made up of his or her peers.
