What is the Magna Carta? • The Magna Carta was a charter signed in 1215 that protected England’s rights and property.
Why is this important? • The Magna Carta brought an end to absolute monarchy and absolute power in England.
In 1214 King John unsuccessfully invaded France, which resulted in taxes for the England so they could pay off for the war. A group of rebel barons wrote the Articles of Baron which became the Magna Carta.
King John sealed the charter in fear of a rebellion and the Magna Carta became England’s first constitution. A few weeks later Pope Innocent III voided the charter at the king’s request. After King John died in 1216, nine year old King Henry III reinstated the charter.
