Introduction • Provide safety induction to a new comer like you is our general practice. • An old hand of the department, most likely is your supervisor/lab-in-charge, would conduct the induction for you and this power point presentation is to supplement the induction with visual aid materials. • Ask question if you are in doubt!!!
University Health and Safety Policy/ Environmental Policy • Health and Safety Policy - to ensure, as far as reasonable practicable, the health and safety of all • Its staff at work • Students in the course of study • The general public using our premises • PolyU committed to achieve high H&S standards over and above statutory requirements. • Environmental Policy – committed to provide a good environment for its staff and students • To ensure that its activities are conducted in an environmentally responsible manner
Your health and safety responsibilities: • to be actively involved in implementing the Health and Safety Policies; • to take reasonable care at work (or in the course of study) for your own health and safety and all others who may be affected by your acts or omissions; • not to interfere with or misuse, intentionally or recklessly, anything provided in the interests of health and safety; and • to report problems relating to health and safety matters.
Possible assistance from departmental health and safety officer (DHSEO) DHSEO of EIE is Dr. M. W. Mak and he is the co-ordinator of departmental H,S&E matters. You may have to contact this important person from time to time. (EIE)

Machinery Safety Dangers:- Traps (compression & crushing, abrasion) Impacts (flying parts or particles) Contact (cuts, drawing-in, piercing) Entanglement (nips)
Guarding & Operation of Machinery Law requires that every dangerous part of a machine must be effectively guarded by any one of the following types of methods or by a combination of them. 1. A fixed guard 2. An interlocking guard 3. An automatic guard 4. A trip guard 5. A two-hand control device
Electrical Safety • Hazards:- • Electric Shock (ventricular fibrillation) • Burn • Ignition of combustible material/Fire • Explosion
Laser Safety • Class 3B or 4 laser equipment must be registered with HSEO • Only trained personnel can be authorized to use Class 3B or 4 laser equipment
First aid box in campus Each teaching laboratory (class-room), research laboratory, research office with many occupants and general office has a first aid box, like one on the photos above. Of course, you can tour the office, workshop or laboratory to familiar with its location.
First Aid Box Contents急救箱物品 All first aid contents should be maintained in a serviceable condition. Fire safety Sound the fire alarm by activating the break-glass fire alarm call point switch in case of fire. Familiar yourself with the location of hose reel and the break-glass alarm.
Emergency shower and eyewash Familiar yourself with the locations of emergency shower and eyewash.
Personal protective equipment Check with your supervisor/lab in-charge on which PPE you need at work/study? • Your departmental health and safety officer (DHSEO), or Laboratory/workshop in-charge is the one to arrange provision of PPE for you. • PPE has a central purchasing program. The department can purchase PPE from suppliers through the central purchasing contract. • For any enquiry, please feel free to contact HSEO.
Maintenance and inspection of PPE • Inspect your PPE before and after each use • Take care of PPE at all times • Clean your PPE after each use • Inform your supervisor on damaged or broken PPE and seek for replacement or repair • Store PPE in clean, dry area - free from exposure to sunlight or contaminants
Emergency reporting • Fire • Any accident/injury • Leakage/spillage of chemical • Any other incidents that life or property is endangered WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IN CASE OF EMERGENCY ?
Call campus security control centre by dialing: 27667999 (emergency line), or 27667666 / 27667177 (24 hours) or Use the emergency telephone sets at various strategic locations
Particulars to be reported to the campus security control centre • Your name and department • Your contact telephone number • Nature of incident with brief description • Full detail of location of accident • Any person(s) injured in the incident
After injury/ incident, report the case to your supervisor or lab in-charge responsible for the area so that they could report the case to HSEO by filling a Accident/Incident Report Form(HSO Form 2) and send it to Health, Safety & Environment Office through the Department Head within 72 hours The HSO Form2 can be downloaded from Intranet electronic form library of The PolyU homepage

Touring Department of Electronic and Information Engineering • There are several places in EIE where staff members should pay particular attention due to higher risk involved. Certainly, it is duty of your supervisor/ lab in-charge to give you necessary information and training before commencing your work at such places. • GH045 - Mechanical safety (EIE)

Face mask training • EIE has established avian flu preparedness policy. As a part of it, you are required to get familiar with face mask usage. Display screen equipment users-revisited • If you are a display screen equipment user, do not ignore the fact that a long term usage can bad health. To prevent it : • 1. Insure that you have appropriate computer setup. • If you have any doubt about your display screen equipment, ask your supervisor or DHSEO to arrange the assessment via DHSEO. • 2. Periodically stop your computer work and perform necessary exercise, as described at http://www.eie.polyu.edu.hk/eSafety . (EIE)
