1. Department of Applied Physics The Hong Kong Polytechnic University News & Events (2008-01~03) 01-01-2008:Happy New Year! 01-02-2008:Welcome! Mr. JIANG Yong joined our group today. Mr. Jiang graduated from the University of Science and Technology of China. He will conduct MPhil study at PolyU, under the supervision of Professor Helen Chan and Dr. Wang. 01-21-2008:ZHOU Xiaoyuan oral exam.The exam started at 10:30 in CD620. She first gave a presentation titled “Dielectric properties of barium strontium titanate (BST) thin films and phase shifters based on BST thin films”. After the presentation followed the session of “Q&A from the floor”, “defense of the thesis (close session)” and “assessment of the thesis and the candidate’s performance”. The oral exam completed at 12:20. External examiners (Profs Subramanyam and Gao) and internal examiners (Drs. Wong and Wang, Prof. Choy) and fourteen observers were present at the exam. 01-22-2008:Congratulations!Official notice has been received from RO today that the PolyU had approved Dr. WANG Guoyu's Post-doctoral Fellowship (PDF) application. The title of the PDF project is “Study of Oxygen Isotope Effect on the Electrical and Magnetic Properties of Perovskite Oxide-based Thin Films and Nanostructures”. The project is for a period of two years. Dr. WANG Yu is the PI of the project, Dr. WONG K.H. of AP is the Co-I of the project. 01-29-2008:YUN Pan oral exam.YUN Pan’s presentation is titled “Barium Zirconate Titanate Thin Films for Tunable Microwave Applications”. External examiners (Prof Lee), internal examiners (Dr. Poon, Prof. Chan and Dr. Wang) and observers were present at the exam. 01-31-2008:A papertitled “Controllable hydrothermal synthesis of KTa1-xNbxO3 nanostructures with various morphologies and their growth mechanisms" (Mr. HU Yongming as the 1st author; Dr.WANG Yu & Prof. CHAN as coauthors) is now available online. It will appear in the March issue of Crystal Growth and Design. 01-31-2008:Bye to ZHOU Xiaoyuan and YUN Pan. Department of Applied Physics The Hong Kong Polytechnic University 02-07-2008:Happy Spring Festival! 02-11-2007:A papertitled “Improvement of ferroelectric fatigue endurance in multiferroic (Ba0.5Sr0.5)TiO3/(Bi1.05La0.05)FeO3/(Ba0.5Sr0.5)TiO3 sandwich structures" (Dr. MIAO Jun as the first author and Dr. Wang as coauthor) appears in the February 11 issue of Applied Physics Letters (Vol.92, p.062902). 02-26-2008:Congratulations!Mr. ZHANG Yi Ling is honored the Most Outstanding PolyU Student Award. The PolyU gives this honor to only one undergraduate student each year. Zhang also won the Outstanding Student of Faculty Award. We are very proud to have him as a member of our Team. 02-29-2007:A papertitled “Substrate-induced strain effect in La0.875Ba0.125MnO3 thin films grown on ferroelectric single crystal substrates" (First author - Dr. ZHENG Renkui. Dr. WANG as the second author) appears in the February 29 issue of Applied Physics Letters (Vol.92, p.082908). 03-05-2008:Mr. HU Yongming’s paper onhydrothermal synthesis of KTa1-xNbxO3 (details are given in last page) is now published in Crystal Growth and Design (Vol.8, 832-7). 03-17-2008:A papertitled “Hydrogen-a metastable donor in TiO2 single crystals” (First author - Prof. CHEN Wanping of Wuhan University.
