1st Stage: Living on Land The Cuticle: • Plants that live on land are subject to dehydration. • The cuticle is a waxy coating that prevents evaporation to aerial parts of plants
Gametangia (container of gametes): • On land, all gametes are in danger of drying out because there is no water to keep then hydrated
The Stomata: • If water cannot evaporate across the cuticle, then oxygen & carbon dioxide cannot diffuse • The stomata are small pores on the underside of leaves that open & close to control the movement of water, oxygen, & carbon dioxide
2nd Stage: Development of Vascular Tissue What Plants Need: • Water & Minerals from the ground • Light to reach above ground structures
In Small Plants: • Water and Nutrients can be distributed by diffusion In Large Plants: • A Vascular System provides a way to transport material
3rd Stage: Seed & Pollen A Seed: • Is an embryo with improvements • Provides a protecting coating so it does not dry out • Within the coating of the seed is food for the embryo
4th Stage: Development of Flowers & Plants Flowers: • Reproductive structures with Ovaries • Attracts Pollinators
Fruits: • Mature Ovaries • Provide further protection for seeds • Help in seed dispersal
Why is the Vascular System & Seeds Important in Plant Evolution: Vascular System: • Helps water travel through the plants • Provides minerals & light Seeds: • Provides a protective coating so the plant doesn’t dry out • Provides food
