SECTION 3 Birds
Characteristics of Birds • All birds are covered in feathers and lay hard shelled eggs. They sit on these eggs to incubate them or warm them up so they will hatch. • Birds has two legs, two wings, and beaks • Flying is common in most birds, but penguins, ostriches, emus and kiwis cannot fly.
Adaptations for Flight • Most birds have hollow bones that make their skeletons light. • Birds use their tales to help them steer in the air. • Flying requires a lot of energy, birds eat high energy foods like nectar, insects, fish or other meat. • As wind passes above and below the wing it creates lift.
Functions of Feathers • Birds are the ONLY animals with feathers • Contour feathers give adult birds their streamline shape and color. • Down feathers are small and fluffy. These keep birds warm. • Birds that fly will molt their feathers one at a time matching on each side. • Birds care for their feathers by preening. They will clean and smooth their feathers by using oil their body produces.
