Terms • Yuppie: a young college-educated adult who is employed in a well-paying profession and who lives in generally urban areas • Space Shuttle: a reusable spacecraft designed to transport people and cargo between Earth and space • Space Station: a large satellite designed to be occupied for long periods and to serve as a base for operations in space
A Decade of Indulgence • American society of wealth and success • Baby boomers finish college and enter job market • Discount retailers- sell goods at low prices (ex. Wal-Mart, K Mart, Target) • Entrepreneurs start new businesses (ex. Best Buy and Home Depot)
Technology and the Media • New TV networks began such as CNN, BET, MTV specializing in one type of broadcasting • New arcade games such as Pong, PacMan and Space Invaders, new hang out spots for teens • Technology created music videos and rap music making multimillion-dollar industries • Shows such as Dallas and Dynasty glamorized lives of the very wealthy
A Society Under Stress • Drug use is a problem among teens in cities and small towns which caused tons of crime • 1980- Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), legal drinking age is raised to 21 • HIV/AIDS- spread through body fluids among men and women, deadly epidemic • Over 100,000 AIDS cases in the U.S. (1988)
Social Activism • Stonewall riot marks beginning of a gay activist movement • Environmentalists were active in protesting nuclear power plants and wetland protection • Singers, actors become activists to social problems such as the homeless and starving • American Association of Retired Persons- against cuts in Medicare and Social Security
A New Era in Space • April 12, 1981- Columbia, first space shuttle lift off • 1983- Sally Ride was first American woman in space • Challenger explodes after liftoff (Jan. 1986) • Dec. 1998- International Space Station building begins
