Important Dates • Thursday & Friday – In class working on the rough draft of our entire research paper. • Tuesday, May 8th Rough Draft is due. • Tuesday, may 15th Final Paper is due.
Here is the plan… • Students will be able to read and summarize material from the textbook. • Students will understand the change in the relationship between Europe and China that took place in the late 1700’s. • Students will explore the beginnings of Communism in China.
Summarize • The passage entitled “A Position of Strength” from page #343 - #345 in textbook. • Try to do it in 3-5 of your own sentences!
Late 1700’s • As China was entering a period of decline – Europe was in the midst of the Industrial Revolution!
FORCED • Have you ever been “forced” to do something against your will? • How did that make you feel? • What did the other person have over you?
Read • European Imperialism from page #344 & #345. • For each of the following subheadings – Opium War / Unequal treaties / Increased foreign influence – list 1 thing that the Chinese were forced to accept!
Humiliation #1 • BIG PICTURE – The Opium War was about TRADE not DRUGS!
Humiliation #2 • The Chinese were forced to “turn over” the port of Hong Kong to British control in 1842. • The British finally returned Hong Kong to the Peoples Republic of China in 1997
Humiliation #3 • The Europeans carved China into spheres of influence. • Japan was also able to expand into China -after defeating the Chinese in the Sino-Japanese War of 1895.
