Bell Work: 11/11/13 • What is a cell? • Compare and contrast plant and animal cells.
Objectives Identify and describe the function of the major plant and animal cell organelles. (SPI0707.1.1) Today we are going to discuss the Cell Theory and the difference between Prokaryotic Cells and Eukaryotic Cells.
Why? • Studying cells helps us understand how organisms, including humans, function. After all, our bodies are made up of trillions of cells. By learning about cells, we come to understand how we can protect cells to prevent infection, observe cells to diagnose disease, treat cells to heal illnesses, and stop harming cells through our choices and actions. Medical advances, such as skin grafting, would not have been possible without an understanding of how different cells work.

Cells & Cell Theory I. • A cell is the smallest unit that can perform all the processes necessary for life. • Cell Theory: • All organisms are made of one or more cells. • The cell is the basic unit of all living things. • All cells come from existing cells.
Two Kinds of Cells II. Prokaryotic Eukaryotic • Cells with a nucleus • Largest cells • Most are multicellular (many cells) • Multicellular organisms are larger than single-celled • Animals & plants • Cells with NO nucleus. • Single-celled organisms • Bacteria is the smallest cells known; no nucleus, but does have DNA
