  2. Essential Questions How did the people, events, and ideas that shaped ancient China continue to influence the world?
  3. Geography and Early China China’s physical geography made farming possible but travel and communication difficult. Civilization began in China along the Huang He and Chang Jiang rivers. China’s first dynasties help Chinese society develop and made many other achievements.

  5. Notebook Activity #1 Over the centuries, the Chinese invented many important things. Write your answers in your notebook and be prepared to back up your claim with examples and evidence.
  6. The Zhou Dynasty and New Ideas The Zhou Dynasty expanded China but then declined. Confucius offered ideas to bring order to Chinese society. Taoism and Legalism also gained followers.
  7. Notebook Activity #2 Confucianism believed that people need to return to ethics and moral values. Taoists believe humans should live simply and in harmony with nature. Legalists believed that people were bad by nature and needed to be controlled. Which of these do you believe? Why? Write your response in your notebook
  8. The Qin Dynasty The first Qin Emperor created a strong but strict government. An unified China was created through Qin policies and achievements.

The new emperor is a harsh ruler with no love for learning. He says you must burn all the books that disagree with his ideas. The idea horrifies you. But if you do not obey, the punishment may be severe. Will you obey the order to burn your books? Why or why not?
  10. The Han Dynasty Han Dynasty government was based on the ideas of Confucius. Family life was supported and strengthened in Han China. The Han made many achievements in art, literature, and learning.

  12. Han Contacts with Other Cultures Farming and manufacturing grew during the Han Dynasty. Trade routes like China with the Middle East and Rome. Buddhism came to China from India and gained many followers.
  13. Notebook Activity #5 Imagine you are a trader traveling along the Silk Road on the way to China. This is your first journey, but you have heard many stories about the country. You know the trip will be hard, through mountains and deserts and terrible weather. While you expect to make a good profit from the silk you will buy there, you are also curious about China and its people. What do you expect to find in China?
