Monday, November 28 • Chapter 7.1 Vocab • 1. Huang He – second longest river in China; used to be known as the Yellow River • 2. Chang Jiang – river in China that is the 3rd longest river in the world; used to be called the Yangtze River • 3. Anyang – city in northern China that was the country’s 1st capital • 4. Wu Wang – led a rebellion against the Shang; began a new dynasty called the Zhou • 5. dynasty – line of rulers from the same family • 6. aristocrat – nobles whose wealth came from land ownership • 7. Pictograph – a character that stands for objects • 8. ideograph – character used for Chinese writing; a character that joins two or more pictographs to represent ideas • 9. bureaucracy – a group of appointed officials who are responsible for different areas of government • 10. mandate – formal order • 11. Dao – proper way Chinese kings were expected to rule under the Mandate of Heaven
J#23 How did the people of China move from nomads to settlers? 6.2 • Very little is known about how they settled • Probably stayed in the Huang He River Valley because of the rich soil and discovery of farming • They figured our how to farm and use the river year round for survival • As their population increased, they got organized and formed villages and towns
